Awel Co-op owns two 2.35MW Enercon wind turbines on Mynydd y Gwrhyd, 20 miles north of Swansea.

Read our Awelog to find out how our wind farm was built. The turbines were commissioned on January 25th 2017. They produce over 12,000 MWh of clean, low carbon energy per year –  enough to supply over 2,500 homes.

The wind farm was funded by £3m of community shares and a £5.25m loan from Triodos Bank.

We had some fun…here is Paul Thorburn, Welsh rugby legend, recreating his Monster kick feat by booting a rugby ball over one of our turbine foundations. And Emily Hinshelwood, our co-founder, imagining the turbine concrete pour as an episode of Bake Off, complete with a flying strawberry!

A stunning film celebrating the completion of the wind farm was made by Bafta Cymru-winning local cameraman, Mike Harrison.

We have a 15-year maintenance agreement with Enercon who have staff who live in local villages. Enercon are paid per MWh of generation so are incentivised to keep them spinning! Our staff manage the site and coordinate meter readings/site visits – we can see the turbines from our houses so know when there’s an issue!

We are hoping to install 2MW of ground mount solar in the future. This will make more efficient use of our grid connection as the wind turbines generate a lot more in the winter whereas the solar will be help supplement that in the summer.
